The portafilter is an original spare part for Saeco, Philips and Gaggia coffee machines.

The pressurized filter holder is inserted into the brew group from below and secured by turning the handle. A filter basket filled with ground coffee is placed inside it. The built-in pressure mechanism creates resistance to the coffee flow and helps form the espresso foam layer known as crema.

The portafilter is usually replaced if:
• the metal body of the holder is cracked, deformed or otherwise damaged;
• the locking lugs are broken or worn, so the holder can no longer be securely locked into the brew group;
• the built-in pressure mechanism is damaged and its operation cannot be restored by cleaning or replacing individual parts.

Before purchasing the filter holder, check whether the entire holder needs to be replaced:
• if the coffee does not flow or only drips, thoroughly clean the filter holder and the filter basket;
• if coffee leaks around the edge of the holder, clean the edge and check that the holder is inserted correctly and inspect the brew group gasket — in this case, the filter holder itself may not be defective;
• if only the handle or an individual part of the pressure mechanism is damaged, check whether that part can be replaced separately — the entire filter holder may not need to be replaced.

For safety: do not remove the filter holder while coffee is being brewed or while pressure remains inside it — there is a risk of scalding.
